I found this little gem when I was looking back over some older shoots and had to share it. When creating a collection for families you have to choose which pictures to keep and which to cull. You don't always get it right. Sometimes you discard a photo for some small imperfection and lose out on sharing a photo like this one, one that is full of character and authenticity. But for photographers like me whose goal is to capture the essence of feeling, vulnerability is about opening oneself up in order to connect. Connect with the moment, connect with the people around you and to connect with what you're photographing. Vulnerability is also letting yourself be in front of the camera and bravely having those intimate moments captured on film. What if my child misbehaves through the whole shoot? Does this sound familiar? This is pretty much the number one concern parents have when booking a family shoot with me and I get it. One of things I love the most about working with children is just how uninhibited they are. They know what they want and aren't afraid to stand their ground to get it. Sometimes this can seem challenging and parents worry that their kids won’t listen or take direction. Some children love direction and respond really well to being guided and other children work best when a photographer gets on their wavelength and works with their energy levels. If that means following them around the beach while they point out all the cool shells they can find instead of sitting on mums lap, then I’m all good with that. There are different strategies for different personalities, and part of being a photographer is reading those differences and responding to what works best.
